Thank you for your support to remove milfoil from Crystal Lake. As you may have heard, the DEP grant was withheld due to our economic conditions. BUT the Town of Ellington is still proceeding on the project. The CLA Milfoil Committee has met with the contractor, and they are preparing a plan to present to the BOS to optimize the removal yield with the funds we have available.

June 2009 The Town of Ellington has appointed an Ad Hoc Crystal Lake Milfoil Committee which will manage and monitor the suction harvest project this summer. The Committee will work closely with the CLA, the CT DEP, and George Knoecklin of Northeast Aquatic Research. We will keep you up to date on this project with a New section under Milfoil Harvesting.

Ellington Board of Selectmen and Fiance Approve Funds to Remove Milfoil from Crystal Lake

The Town of Ellington, with guidance from the Crystal Lake Association, have applied for grant from the State of Connecticut DEP -Grant to Municipalities for the Control of Invasive Species. It requires that the town fund a percentage of the grant which must be used for initial removal of the plants, by a qualified contractor and not maintenance.  As you will recall, see Enviornmental Topics-Milfoil, milfoil was successfully removed in a test area of the lake by suction harvesting. The plant growth is estimated to exceed 20 acres and if not removed in time, will make the lake unusable for summer water activities. The Board of Selectmen and Board of Finance unanimously approved $67,000 in matching funds for the project. The grant will be awarded by the DEP on February 15,2009.
