Photo and Description of the Harvesting Process

The milfoil harvesting project was interesting to watch. Each milfoil plant is pulled, including the roots, from the lake bottom by a diver in SCUBA gear. It is then inserted into a suction tube that the diver pulls along with him. The plants and water are then sucked up a 50 foot long tube and dumped into a net bag suspended in the water. The holes in the net are small enough so the plants can't escape but the water flows back into the lake. As you can see in the picture the tube floats on the surface held afloat by the colored 'floatees' and is pulled by the diver. The 'crew' on the pontoon boat change the net bags, keep the pump running, and collect any small plants which may float to the surface. These plants (not milfoil) are uprooted during the pulling of the milfoil . Some of us may have seen them in the water during the harvesting procedure. After the bags are filled they are transferred into onion sacks for disposal. Found an interesting article on Milfoil in Maine.
